Waste Wise Audit

Room 10  had the wonderful job of helping our school become a Wastewise school! In order to make changes with how we deal with our waste, we had to do a waste audit. This involved our waste facilitator Ron teaching us about what happens to the waste that goes to the landfill. Then we had to collect all the rubbish the school produced over one whole day.  The next day, we got ready to sort it...ourselves!
Learning about the different types of rubbish
Here comes the rubbish!

We all had old clothes and gloves on. We were each given a bucket and a type of rubbish to look for. We scrambled around filling our buckets. It was a little bit gross, but we knew how important it was to find out what was going into our rubbish bins.
We were super keen eco warriors!
Once we had sorted it we had to get ready to weigh it. The bins that had the most were plastic wrappers and food scraps.

Finally it was time to weigh. It wasn't surprising to see that the food waste weighed the most. Dazharn and Fili were our data collectors.

Then came the clean up, we had to clean all of the equipment and make sure the hall was sparkling!

We discovered after we crunched the numbers, that Waikowhai Primary's rubbish has 83% of recyclable waste that is going to the landfill! That is not good for our environment. We are now working on how we can make changes in our school to deal with our rubbish more responsibly. Watch this space...
